Called the largest meat distribution center in the world, New York City Council has earmarked $3.45 million in funding to Hunts Point Cooperative Market to add emergency electrical generators.
The cooperative houses 50 companies employing 1,800 people and supporting an addition 1,200 in food service, transportation and professional services. Annual sales are over $3.2 billion from the sale and distribution of 2.5 billion pounds of meat to over 7,500 supermarkets, butcher shops, restaurants, hotels and more.
In the New York area, some 50 percent of the meat comes from the Hunts Point Cooperative Market Cooperative. It also provides over $650 million in economic activity—direct and indirect—to New York City.
The Hunts Point Cooperative Market Cooperative was built in 1972 over 40 acres and six buildings and is now situated on 60 acres and seven buildings with one million square feet of refrigerating space, but it does not have emergency electrical generators in place in the event of a power outage.
